Event helps to push back children illiteracy

The event was held to mark World Literacy Day
Coimbatore: With a noble mission of pushing child illiteracy backwards, Make a Difference (MAD), Coimbatore, held Back-a-thon at Race Course here on Monday. The event was held to mark World Literacy Day.
Coimbatore was among the 20 cities in the country where the event was organised. Around 200 participants, mainly college students, took part in the Back-a-thon. Anjan S, city team lead, MAD, said the event was conducted to push illiteracy one step backwards at a time. Anjan is a software engineer with Cognizant Technologies in Coimbatore.
Sumathi Palaniappan, a teacher handling specially-abled children for over 13 years, told DC that she took part in the event as she felt it was honest and meant for a noble cause.
“Our children need education first, only then can we develop,” she added.
Engineering student Naveen Raj said MAD got youngsters to participate in the event with each volunteer bringing in two of their friends.
Soma S, a Visual Communication student from G.R.D. College, spends time teaching students at Seva Ashram in R.S. Puram every Saturday.
“There is no point in just having an event like this, volunteers like us take time out and help teach the underprivileged. Each one of us has taken the responsibility to teach 5-8 students,” said Soma.
