Chennai: For the first time, veterinarians attached to the Arignnar Anna zoological park (Vandalur zoo) succeeded on Friday in performing a rare bone surgery for a critically endangered blackbuck. A press release from the zoo said the deer's leg was implanted with a plate and pinned during surgery.
The team implanted a dynamic compressed plate inside the hind limb of the blackbuck and removed all the broken bone pieces. Platelet rich plasma was injected into the deer so that the wound heals at a fast rate. It may be noted that AAZP has succeeded in several cataract surgeries for big cats, including a south American jaguar and lions rescued from circus companies.
The zoo authorities also maintain that due to the copious inflow of funds from the state government on the instructions of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, the veterinary hospital in the zoo premises has been enhanced with high and improved facility.
Help was sought from veterinarians at the Madras Veterinary College at Vepery and a team headed by Dr Justin William carried out the operation on the ungulate.
