Hyderabad Metro cost to escalate

Project cost 4 years ago was Rs 14,132cr, three years later, it will now cost Rs 2,500cr more
Hyderabad:The cost of the Hyderabad Metro Rail has escalated by Rs 2,500 crore since its inception three years ago, and if the bottlenecks are not cleared, it will increase by another Rs 1,500 crore.
With the Metro stations now ready, a guided tour by senior officers of Larsen & Toubro and Hyderabad Metro Rail was organised at the Nagole Metro station.
Chief executive and managing director of L&T, V.B. Gadgil, said, “The project is in an extremely critical mode. So far, 28 per cent of the project is complete. We are trying our level best to meet the deadlines and need more co-operation from the people and the government.”
Work on the major pillars is getting hampered due to the heavy traffic routes and hence work is being carried out in phases. At the same time, there are bottlenecks for the pillars at Nampally, Jubilee Hills and Ameerpet, due to which the viaducts can’t be laid.
The pre-cast material is ready at the depot but it is not being utilised due to uncertainty and the re-alignment issue at Sultan Bazaar and near the Assembly.
The cost of the project at the time of signing of the agreement in 2010 was Rs 14,132 crore. Mr Gadgil said that there had been no official communication regarding realignment of the HMR and they would be able to evaluate the exact cost or loss only after the same was received from the Telangana state government.
While there is a clause of change of scope in the agreement, the issue of re-alignment of a section is a matter of discussion between the state government of Telangana and Hyderabad Metro Rail. Mr Gadgil maintained that there had been no official communication and till that was received, they could not evaluate the exact loss or extra cost due to the change.
