Ram Gopal Varma draws devotees’ flak

Devotees of Lord Ganesha have approached the police against Ram Gopal Varma
Hyderabad:Devotees of Lord Ganesha have approached the police against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma regarding his controversial comments about the Hindu god and Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.
While the Hyderabad Ganesh Utsav Samiti has approached the cyber crime wing of the crime investigation department, an advocate has lodged a complaint at the Saroornagar police station against RGV for “insulting” religious beliefs and hurting the sentiments of Hindus.
The director had raised several questions about Ganesha in a series of tweets in his personal twitter account on Friday and Saturday. Most of them with a touch of sarcasm, ridiculed the anatomy of Ganesha and questioned how the god, who could not save himself, can save devotees. However, as twitteratis started reacting to the tweets aggressively, RGV tried to defend himself saying that “his questions and observations about Ganesha stemmed from ignorance about the subject.”
However, later he apologised for hurting the sentiments of devotees. “The tweets I made on Ganesha were not intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments...but if they did I sincerely apologise,” the tweet said.
Meanwhile, police officials said that they have sought legal opinion on the complaint. “Action will be taken on this issue based on legal opinion,” said Saroornagar inspector B. Naveen Reddy.
Ganesh Utsav Samiti general secretary Bhagwant Rao told DC that RGV’s comments insulted devotees. “If police do not take action immediately, we will approach court against the director,” he said.
As an attempt to defend himself, Ram Gopal Varma tweeted a quote of German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche on religion being a narcotic.
