Don't involve husbands in government work: BJP to women councillors

Party’s directions follow PM’s advice of not hiring relatives as personal staff

New Delhi: BJP's Delhi unit president Satish Upadhyay on Friday asked the party's women councillors to ensure that their husbands stayed away from government activities.

"The party has come to know that the husbands of several women councillors are very active in MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) works. They even played role in awarding tenders to contractors following which Upadhyay on Saturday asked women members not to allow their husbands to handle government works," said a senior BJP leader.

He said that the party's directions follow the Prime Minister's recent advice to his cabinet ministers not to hire their relatives as personal staff.

"There is perception among general public that MCD is corrupt. To make better image of the corporation, the party has taken this step," the BJP leader added.

Meanwhile, Upadhay held two separate meetings with MLAs and councillors at the state party office.

At the councillors' meet, it has been decided that for the purpose of eradicating corruption, efforts will be made to introduce online facility for payment of taxes, issuance of birth and death certificates and reservation for community hall from April 1 next year.

"The councillors have assured that they will complete renovation work of school toilets in their wards by September 25. Besides, the corporations have marked four parks each in their ward in which the work of beautification will be started next month," the party said in a statement.

"We will have to create pressure on corporation officers so that red-tape dose not hinder public welfare works and the decisions are taken in a time bound manner as directed by the cabinet secretary on the orders of the Prime Minister," Upadhyay said.

In meeting with MLAs, the Delhi BJP chief also reviewed preparations of DU Students' Union elections and asked them to make a list of students living in their respected areas.

"After preparing the list of such students, MLAs will hand over it to party's students' wing ABVP," another BJP leader said.
