Thiruvananthapuram: The photograph of a pressure cooker and a tube drawn from its exhaust passing through a bucket of cold water is now one of the most shared pictures of the week among social network-savvy Malayalis. It all comes with taglines “let government ban liquor, we will make it at home,” or, “this device will soon be seen in all households in Kerala.” The “heartbreaking comments” posted by many drunkards show their conviction about not giving up their habit even if the government forces a ban. The photos of wine brewer available for purchase online are also being shared through smart phone messaging application WhatsApp.
The number of people searching for the keyword ‘liquor ban’ on Google has increased four times since July as per the calculations of Google trends.However, excise officials have warned youngsters that producing even a glass of liquor at home is a non-bailable offence punishable with imprisonment up to 10 years.
“The pictures trending on Facebook originate from Saudi Arabia where people brew it secretly due to the liquor ban there. The possession of any amount of liquid with ethyl alcohol content in it is a punishable offence in India,” warns Assistant Excise Commissioner Manoharan. As per traders, the chances of people making liquor in Kerala are high because almost 95 percent households with gas connection have pressure cookers.
