Singing a different tune

Ajay Sathyan has done the reverse by forming a new band Prayaan

At a time when many popular bands and band members are making their debut into playback singing, playback singer Ajay Sathyan has done the reverse by forming a new band Prayaan. “It is not even four months since we formed Prayaan and we have already performed in Music Mojo. The response has been very good and we are now planning another session on television soon.

Forming the band was a long process. I met Ramu Raj, our keyboardist, during a music session in Thiruvananthapuram and he was the one who suggested the idea. Later, we met Jayalakshmi Jayakumar and John Amose when the two of us went for a recording at Amritha University, Coimbatore. Radhika Venugopal is a family friend and Ajiit Sathyan is my brother and we roped in many others via Facebook. Our lineup extends from Ladakh to Kanyakumari and we have artistes to perform all different genres of music,” says Ajay.

Ajay, who works as a social media manager in Mumbai, took baby steps into the field of music at the age of three and has ever since been a dedicated student of classical music. “I made my debut in playback singing with the Malayalam movie Goal and have sung for films like Happy Days, Gulumaal and Tamil films like Raattinam and Ilamai Itho Itho. Two other movies for which I have recorded Rasputin in Malayalam and 102 Kms in Tamil, are awaiting release. Other than that I’m also busy with numerous stage shows around the country,” adds Ajay.
