41 acquitted in Kandhamal riot case

Riots broke out in Kandhamal district fter the gruesome murder of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati

Bhubaneswar: A sub-divisional judicial magistrate court in Baliguda of Kandhamal district, on Wednesday acquitted 41 persons accused in 2008 riots in the district for lack of evidence.

Complaints were lodged against these 41 accused for rioting after the gruesome murder of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in August, 2008 at his ashram in Kandhamal district.

Meanwhile, social activist Medha Patkar, seeking a high level probe into the riots, said that she would draw the President’s attention on the nominal compensation given to the victims. A delegation would soon meet the President to apprise him about the lapses in handling the post-riot situation, particularly the measures taken by the state she said.
