Rains boost Srisailam dam inflows

Hydel power being generated at Jurala in Telengana on Krishna river for the first time
Hyderabad: Heavy rains in the catchment areas of Krishna river in between Narayanapur Srisailam, and Tungabhadra have resulted in good inflows into Srisailam dam on Tuesday. The inflows touched, 1,66,654 cusecs as of Tuesday evening. The Central Water Commission predictions indicate good inflows for the next three days as well.Storage levels in Srisailam dam touched 875 feet, while the dam’s full capacity is 885 feet. Capacity reached 163 tmc feet, as against a total capacity of 215 tmc feet.
This is a boon for the irrigation department at Srisailam running all the power units to generate hydel electricity and simultaneously sending almost 6 tmc feet of water to the downstream Nagarjunasagar dam.“We are presently getting 13 to 15 tmc feet of water daily. After release, we are ensuring that the reservoir still has 50 tmc feet as a cushion. We were also told inflows will continue for the next three days at least,” said M. Krishna Rao, chief engineer, Srisailam dam.
Due to increased inflows at Jurala, the first major project on the Krishna River in Telangana state, authorities started producing hydel power while meeting the requirements of the irrigation canals.
At Nagarjunasagar dam as well, water levels touched 202 tmc feet, while the full capacity is 312 tmc feet.
