Model Harrington road getting ready

Project expected to stretch for six months was inspected by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy
Chennai: The relaying of Harrington road at Chetpet into a model stretch has picked up pace with just 75 meters of the road yet to be laid before opening the stretch for thoroughfare. Work on the arterial road began on May 25 at an estimated cost of Rs 9.9 crore. The project, expected to stretch for a period of six months, was inspected by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy on Tuesday.
“Of the 750 meter stretch, about 675 metres of relaying the road with concrete has been completed. But it might take few more months to get the full work done, which includes separate ducts for electrical cables, granite footpaths and stormwater drains,” said a senior corporation engineer. “Dedicate spaces for car and bike parking will also be provided.”
The official added that permission from police to block the other half of the road would be obtained after the work on one half is completed.
In order to facilitate the paving of Harrington Road with concrete, the stretch was made one way and vehicles proceeding from E.V.R. Periyar Salai towards Chetpet junction via Harrington subway are allowed, whereas vehicles heading towards E.V.R. Periyar Salai from Chetpet junction are diverted. Motorists proceeding towards Harrington subway from Chetpet junction now have to go through Dr Gurusamy Bridge and E.V.R. Periyar Salai to reach Harrington Road.
