Hyderabadis are spreading awareness to go green this Ganpati season

Hyderabad: Helping you celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in an eco-friendly and plastic-free manner this year, is city-based NGO, SAVE (Society for Awareness and Vision on Environment).
The organisation is giving 5-foot clay Ganesh idols for just Rs 1. “We have been working towards saving the lakes in Hyderabad, Warangal and Krishna districts for the past 16 years. A lot of Ganesh idols that are made of PoP are immersed into the lakes, contaminating these water bodies. In a quest for a better environment, we planned to start giving away clay Ganesh idols during the festival,” says Vijay Ram, president of SAVE.
To spread awareness about the use of eco-friendly clay idols, the organisation is also giving away around 1,000 free Ganesh idols. About 13,000 5-foot idols have been priced at Rs 1 and will be on sale in the city near Emerald Sweet House, Ramakrishna Math. Along with the idols, the organisation will also provide a set of khadi clothes for the idol.
In another attempt to promote an eco-friendly festival, Surya Prakash from the city has built three Ganesh idols using tissue paper and paper cups. One can find these at Baba Nagar in Nacharam. “I have been doing this for the past five years to spread awareness about eco-friendly Ganesh idols. People think that only idols made of PoP look beautiful. I want to prove them wrong,” says Surya Prakash, who has earlier made Ganesh idols out of matchsticks, one lakh diyas and tea cups.
He adds, “We are a group of 10 members, and it took us 15 days to make three 15-foot idols. Around 50,000 tissue papers and 25,000 paper tea cups (which have ‘Om’ written on each) were used.
