Udupi: Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha MP Shobha Karandlaje claimed that ‘Anna Bhagya’ rice from Karnataka was being used for the ‘Amma Idli’ scheme in Tamil Nadu. Addressing reporters at Udupi Sunday afternoon, Ms Karandlaje said that the ‘Anna Bhagya,’ scheme started by the Congress government in Karnataka had turned ‘Kanna Bhagya.’
“The rice under Anna Bhagya Scheme is being diverted to Tamil Nadu and nearby states by middlemen. As a result, Anna Bhagya rice is used for Amma Idli in Tamil Nadu. If we stand at the inter-state border, we will realise how many trucks carrying Anna Bhagya rice move out of Karnataka. The state government is silent despite this issue being brought to its notice,” Ms Karandlaje said.
She also condemned the incident where groups burst crackers after the death of Jnanpith Award winner U.R. Ananthamurthy on Friday .“No one should play politics when a personality dies. We respect URA and many of our leaders went to pay their last tribute to him. Those who burst crackers are not our people,” she asserted. The MP assured those present that the Central government would stand by areca growers. “Necessary measures would be taken after discussing this with legal experts. Our government will always support areca growers,” she assured.
