Riot against Lakshmipuram cops after man ends life

A cab driver, who had come out of police custody recently, committed suicide
Bengaluru:Tension prevailed at Lakshmipuram near Kempegowda Nagar on Saturday evening after residents went on the rampage, burnt down a Cheetah patrol vehicle and assaulted a policeman after a cab driver, who had come out of police custody recently, committed suicide earlier in the day.
Soon after the news of the cab driver Pradeep’s suicide broke out around 3.45 pm, the residents of Lakshmipuram came out onto the street in droves, protesting against the police “atrocity”. A team of policemen from Kempegowda Nagar police station, who went to investigate the suicide, were assaulted by surging mobs.
As the situation escalated, additional teams of policemen were summoned to the area. The police had to resort to a lathicharge to contain the mob. Additional Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Alok Kumar and DCP South-East Rohini Sepat rushed to the spot to pacify the angry protesters.
The police picked up Pradeep (24) for questioning on Wednesday after his neighbours complained that the cab driver was creating nuisance in the area after getting drunk. Pradeep’s relatives alleged that he was kept in the police lock-up for three days and was not given food. They also charged that they gave Rs 15,000 to a police officer at the Kempegowda police station Friday night to get him released. Pradeep, who returned home around 11.15 pm on Friday, narrated the horror story to his friend. He was found hanging by his father, Eeranna, on Saturday afternoon.
