7 dead, widespread damage in heavy rains

Widespread destruction was reported from high ranges of Thiruvananthpruam district
Thiruvananthpuram: Heavy rains over the last two days have wrought havoc across the state with reports of seven deaths and widespread damage to houses and cultivation. According to reports reaching here, one Prashanth died after falling in a water logged paddy field in Pathanamthitta, another person was found dead in Thiruvalla and a three-year-old child died after falling into a water pool in Munrothurthu. A house collapsed in Punalur killing the occupant Radhakrishnan, in Kozhikode Sreeraman died afer falling into a flooded drain.
Meanwhile, the body of Ratheesh who drowned on Friday while crossing a flooded river in Malappuram district, was recovered on Saturday. Met department predicted heavy rainfall (not exceeding 7 cm) to very heavy rainfall (exceeding 13 cm) in some parts of the state and Lakshadweep till August 25. With monsoon gaining strength after a lull, the rain deficit has come down to five per cent less for the current season.
The state received 1,620.1 mm rainfall against the normal of 1,701.4 mm from June 1 to August 22, according to Met office. Widespread destruction was reported from high ranges of Thiruvananthpruam district. Vithura, Katakada, Palode were cut off from the rest of the district for many hours In Kochi, incessant rains since Friday night waterlogged most of the low-lying areas in the city, resulting in traffic jam at all vital junctions like Vytilla, Palarivattom, Kadavantra, Edapally, Aluva and Kaloor.
However no untoward incident was reported even as rainfall of 50.8 mm was recorded in the city.
Alappuzha: The rain lashed Mavelikara and Kayamkulam indundating many low lying areas. Ponnaramthottam, Kochikkal, Chettikulangara in Mavelikara Taluk received havy rainfall.Kozhikode: While rains continued in the hill regions of Malabar, two persons drowned in the region on Saturday. The district administration rehabilitated as
many as 40 families when low-lying areas were flooded by heavy rains on Friday.
Thrissur: Heavy rains damaged more than 25 houses in the district since last night. Many families have been displaced in the coastal areas of the district following rough seas. Eight relief camps have been opened in the district. Over 50 trees were uprooted in heavy rains and strong winds.
Kottayam:
Twenty relief camps have been opened in the district in view of heavy rains. “We have opened camps Changanacherry Taluk and one in Kottayam Taluk”, district collector Ajith Kumar told DC. There was landslide in Kappally near Poonjar on Friday evening.
Idukki: With water submerging the KSRTC bus stand in Thodupuzha. Landslides were reported in Vandiperiyar, Peerumedu, Ellapetty, Kovilmala.
