South Indian actresses have been faunting the chunky nose ring with panache

Chennai:Bollywood actresses Sonam Kapoor and Vidya Balan took the fashion world by storm when they gave an unprecedented twist to their ethnic look by flaunting the traditional over-sized nose ring on the international red carpet last year, thus setting a new micro trend across the nation.
Taking a leaf from their fashion book, actresses down South too have also taken a fascination to the accessory. Actress Shriya Saran let no accessory dominate her look except a nose ring at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai recently. Actress Hansika too could not think of a better option to adorn her look for a photo shoot.
Indigenously known as the nath, this traditional Maharashtrian accessory was mainly worn by brides on the day of their wedding and eventually found its way on fashion ramps, red carpets and awards nites among others.
According to Shriya, “The nose ring is a very beautiful accessory. I always wanted to pierce my nose. It looks cool and classy. Many have a notion that the accessory doesn’t go well with every skin. But I don’t think so. It renders a retro and bohemian feel to one’s look, depending on the size of the nose ring and one’s keenness in experimenting with it. For starters, I would suggest a small nose ring, which is very sultry, and then sport a bigger one eventually.”
According to Chennai-based stylist Prajanya Anand, naths are a blast from the past. “It is like re-living the Maharaja era. I love the fact that the accessory has been fast-tacked to next level,” she says. But not everybody can pull off a nath, she points out. “It depends on one’s facial structure. For instance, a round ring will not suit a person with round face.”
Sharing a great tip for those wanting to try an over-sized nose ring, Prajanya says, “The chain that links the nose ring to the ear or hair can make another fashion statement altogether. These chains come in various patterns and materials such as pearls. So one can even link the chain to their small nose stud or nose ring.”
Shriya recommends keeping the look simple by not overly accessorising. “Adding too many accessories will give out a wrong signal about your personality. Moreover, ensure that you wear it with a traditional Indian outfit to impart a very Indian feel,” she suggests.
Teaming up an over-sized nath with a western outfit can make a huge fashion statement, says Prajanya. “When it comes to traditional outfits, a lehenga with a nath is a run-of-the-mill trend. Instead, pairing it with a chiffon or georgette sari is a real head turner. Headgears and chunky or too small earrings are big NOs.”
