KPCC vice president M M Hassan: Strengthen police, excise

Hassan lauded Oomen Chandy for taking a path breaking decision to shut bars
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC vice president M M Hassan has urged the government to strengthen the police and excise department ahead of implementing phased prohibition in the state.
While hailing the decision taken by the UDF Government, he gave full credit to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for taking such a path breaking step and also lauded the firm stand taken by KPCC president V M Sudheeran and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on the issue.
At a press conference here, Hassan said for the implementation of measures announced by the government as part of phased prohibition, more staff strength, infrastructure facilities and modernisation of the department would be needed. The success of policy will depend mainly on the law enforcing agencies and public support, he said adding that the staff strength particularly in police department and excise will have to be increased significantly.
Hassan said that the UDF Government had proved that it kept peoples interest above everything else. The KPCC vice president also hailed UDF constituents for their support.
Meanwhile, CPM deputy Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that the abkari policy was announced by the chief minister to score brownie points over V M Sudheeran. ''If the chief minister is sincere than he should ask his colleagues in Cabinet who own bars., to stop liquor business,’’ he said.
The CPM leader said that the abkari policy was impractical and had been decided without holding detailed discussions with stake holders.
