Bengaluru’s ‘dark spots’ turn a haven for miscreants

Volunteers launch ‘Safety Walks’, a drive to identify unsafe areas in city

Bengaluru: The Sunday night incident, where a couple was accosted by armed miscreants and robbed of their SUV, was yet another instance of couples being targeted at desolate places during night time. There are numerous such dark spots in the city where street lightings are poor, especially in up-market residential areas across the city. The miscreants take advantage of people who are out on night stroll, walk their dogs, park vehicles, or even sitting for a chat before alighting out of their vehicles.

Meanwhile, the police are still on the lookout for the black Mahindra Scorpio (registration number KA34-M-7187), that was robbed from a city-based techie near Koramangala on Sunday night. The incident happened around 10 pm, while the techie was sitting inside the vehicle and chatting with his female friend in front of her apartment.

The techie, Lokesh Sanjeevappa, a system analyst and a resident of Koramangala, had offered to drop the woman at an apartment in Jakkasandra, where she was residing as a paying guest. While the couple was having a chat inside the SUV, two machete-wielding men approached them and told them to get out of the vehicle. The men got into it and fled, police said.

The police, however, denied that the miscreants had misbehaved with the woman. “According to the complaint, the two men wielding machetes after intimidating the victim, fled with his car, leaving him and his female friend at the spot,” said a senior investigating officer. The police suspect that the stolen vehicle might be used to commit other crimes and have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.

A group of volunteers had recently launched a drive called ‘Safety Walks’ to identify dark spots in the city, where the street lighting is poor and police patrolling rare, which encourages miscreants to commit crimes, especially against women. There are numerous such spots in the city, which are yet to be identified and a report will be soon submitted to the city police commissioner, said a volunteer.
