Kalpana Chawla award to Nagai SP R Ponni

She served as SP, Erode for 21 months before assuming charge as SP, Nagapattinam
Chennai: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday presented the annual Kalpana Chawla award for courage and daring enterprise to superintendent of police (Nagapattinam) R. Ponni for her role in curbing Maoist movement in the Sathyamangalam forest area and her efforts in stopping illegal sand quarrying as ASP, Chengalpattu.
SP Ponni is a 2008 batch IPS officer who started her career as ASP, Thirupattur (Vellore) and later as ASP, Chengalpattu. After 20 months of service as ASP, she was promoted to the rank of SP in May 2011. She served as SP, Erode for 21 months before assuming charge as SP, Nagapattinam, in February 2014.
“During her career, she exhibited courage and exceptional initiative in carrying out her duties. When she was posted as ASP, Chengalpattu, she intercepted 26 sand-laden lorries and got them booked for illicit sand quarrying and smuggling. It is worth nothing that she did this single-handedly, with assistance from only her driver, knowing that officials had been killed or injured while attempting to stop illicit sand quarrying,” a state government release said.
While she was SP, Erode, Ponni was instrumental in getting an activist detained under NSA and the action curbed the left wing extremist influence in the sensitive forest area.
Other awards that were distributed during the Independence Day function included, Best Doctor award to Prof Amar Agarwal, Best Social Worker for Sr. Virgt Johnsi of Mercy Illam, Tirunelveli, Best Institution to Srishti Special School and Best Private Employer award to Sakthi Masala.
While Tiruchi corporation bagged the Best Corporation award, Kumbakonam received the award for Best Municipality and Thalanayar received the Best Performance award for best town panchayat.
