Full functionality, fast recovery time more likely

Chennai: While conventional total hip replacement procedures are commonly taken up for hip-related ailments, they hardly provide complete relief from pain and help patients in regaining their desired lifestyle.
Increasingly, patients who are not yet in the autumn of their lives choose Birmingham hip resurfacing (BHR), a procedure that involves placing a metal cap over the head of the femur (thigh bone).
In this procedure, a little portion of the bone from the patient’s hip is removed, compared to total hip replacement, says Dr Vijay C. Bose, joint director and senior consultant at SIMS Hospital in Vadapalani.
Dr Bose had recently performed BHR on a 58-year-old man from Pakistan who suffered hip ailment to the point that the man, whose passion was running, could not even walk.
Speaking about it, patient Nadeem Mumtaz Qureshi said he slowly started developing pain while running which worsened further. “I searched the Internet and zeroed in on the hospital,” he says.
Qureshi arrived in Chennai a month ago, a few days before the procedure was taken up. Doctors at SIMS hospital say that he has fully recovered and can now resume his running when he returns to Pakistan.
The approximate cost of the procedure is around Rs 3 lakh. BHR procedures are now increasingly preferred by patients with hip ailments as the recovery time and restoration of full functionality of the hip are more likely.
