Coimbatore:While the election for the post of mayor is expected by the month-end, the corportion Thursday released the electoral list of 12,90,652 voters in the 100 wards of the corporation. The corporation has been functioning without a mayor since May 28 when former mayor S.M. Velusamy was removed from the post of AIADMK district secretary and forced to resign from his official post.
The resignation followed the hit-and-run incident in which the mayor's vehicle was involved. The 31-year-old mill worker who was hit by the mayor's vehicle near Palladam succumbed to injuries.
The vehicle driver was arrested on charges of hit-and-run after the public confirmed that it was the mayor's car that was involved in the accident.
The public alleged that the mayor's car had turned towards the wrong side of the national highway and escaped the moment the vehicle hit the mobike coming in the right direction. While this triggered his ouster, sources have it that the Chief Minister had taken cognisance of his autocratic, undemocratic style of functioning and for not supporting the AIADMK's Assembly candidate A.P. Natarajan.
It is said the AIADMK would field the party's district secretary P. Rajkumar as the mayoral candidate.
