Survivors celebrate freedom from cancer

Website containing cancer info launched
Chennai: Over 100 cancer survivors celebrated the eve of the country’s Independence day reminiscing their freedom from cancer at the Sri Ramachandra University here on Thursday.
For the first time in India, a website that contains all cancer related information was launched by the hospital as part of the festivities. The site that would also be available in regional languages offers a forum for doubts from patients and inspirational stories from survivors.
“Cancer can occur even in infants and can be detected in early stages. Getting treated at the earliest can render speedy recovery to patients,” said Dr Anita Ramesh, medical oncologist, Sri Ramachandra Medical College.
“The treatment time for most cancers is six months and can cost up to ten lakhs. Due to financial crunch, most patients might not be able to take proper treatment. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (TNCMCHIS) has benefited over 80% of the cancer patients,” she added.
Every year, around 200-500 cancer patients are beneficiaries of TNCMCHIS which entitles people with an annual income less than '75,000 to a medical claim up to 1 lakh per year which is extended to 1.5 lakhs in special cases, a release said.
“My child was diagnosed with blood cancer when she was 3 years old. She underwent a one year treatment and three years of follow up with Dr Anita and she is healthy now testifying that cancer can be cured with sufficient medical attention,” said father of a 10 year old child who did not want to be named.
