Telangana Congress leaders Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Jana Reddy differ on loan waiver

Telangana Congress is against granting special powers to Governor, says Jana Reddy
Hyderabad: Differences among the top leadership of Telangana Congress came to the fore on Wednesday with Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Ponnala Lakshmaiah and Leader of Opposition in Telangana Assembly K. Jana Reddy, giving different views on the TRS government’s loan waiver scheme for farmers.
At a media conference on Wednesday, Mr Lakshmaiah read an open letter to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, raising concerns on several issues facing Telangana and criticised him for not implementing a single poll promise even after 70 days of forming the government.
He specifically raised the loan waiver scheme issue and said that despite announcing waiver of farm loans to the tune of Rs 1 lakh, the government had failed to implement it till date. “We want clarity on the whole issue and want to know by when will the implementation take place,” he asked.
Meanwhile, at a separate press conference, Mr Jana Reddy hailed Mr Rao for signing the relevant file for implementing the loan waiver scheme and appealed to the Chief Minister for complete disbursement of the waiver amount within a month.
Mr Jana Reddy also said prima facie the Telangana Congress was against granting special powers to the Governor, more so on the law and order front, and added that it was dangerous to bypass the legally established system and the duly elected Cabinet.
The Leader of Opposition in Telangana Assembly also said that the Congress would extend whatever cooperation was needed by the government in taking up the issue with the Centre.
“It is the responsibility of the central government to protect the dignity and self respect of the people of Telangana while dealing with the state government,” he added.
Mr Jana Reddy said that the Congress would frame its views once Union home minister Rajnath Singh gave a final statement on the issue of powers to the Governor after meeting TRS MPs on August 18.
He also asked the state government to come out with a specific time limit for implementing all its policies and promises made in its election manifesto.
