Engineering students turn teachers of organic farming

The initiative comes as part of Excel fest in Kochi
Kochi: The students of Government Model Engineering College in Kochi are all set to inspire school students across the city to take up organic farming and also foster innovative ideas in them. The initiatives are part of the ‘Excel’ fest, billed as South India’s largest techno-managerial fest.
“The first programme is the ‘.ISSUE!’ where the students focus on pertinent social issues. This time the theme is ‘Poison on plates’. Instead of ending the topic with a series of lectures, the students expressed their wish to indulge in a real campaign,” said Aparna Devi P S, Assistant Professor, Model Engineering College, Trikkakkara.
As part of the month-long campaign to be launched on August 15, the students will visit schools in the city to educate children on organic farming that helps avoid harmful effects of the use of pesticides and additives. They have tied up with ‘Krishibhavan’ to distribute organic kits to school students and also households in and around the city.
“We have tied up with the AISSAC (Association for Information Systems) and will be visiting schools across the city for the purpose. We believe in the ‘Practice before you preach’ principle. So we will be starting an organic farm in the college campus itself,” said Roshita Paul, student.
The college students are also conducting ‘IBETO’ (Innovations for a Better Tomorrow) initiative for the school students.
“It seeks to find and nurture the best innovative ideas that have the potential to transform society and is open to school students across the country. A project fund of upto '1 lakh will be extended,” Aparna said.
