APERC remains in charge of electricity in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

It was decided that the Commission will continue its role as in charge of electricity for the two states

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission will be holding on to its powers until the two new states come up with their own functional ERCs.

In a high-level meeting, it was decided that the Commission will continue its work as the guardian of the power sector in the two states as the AP Reorganisation Act specifically says that the APERC will continue till the new ERCs are formed.

On Wednesday, the APERC passed a new order concerning the four discoms and the private power producer Spectrum Energy.

Earlier, after the APERC had passed an order saying that the power purchase agreements cannot be cancelled, the AP government had said that the APERC no longer had the authority to pass orders because AP had issued an order for constituting a new ERC.

Even Telangana had issued a similar order.

A senior official from APERC said, “The two state governments have only announced their own ERCs, but have not formed them yet. APERC will continue to exist until new ERCs are formed.”
