USB Type-C finalised; USB connectors can now be reversible

The USB Type-C connector can be used in either direction similar to a Lightning connector

The USB Promoter Group has finalised the design for the Type-C USB plug. The new design is set to be a new standard and replace all connectors on all future smartphones and gadgets. The Type-C USB plug (or socket) can accept the Type-C USB connector in any direction (reversible) similar to Apple’s Lightening connector.

According to a report on ExtremeTech, the new USB connector is similar in size to the existing micro USB 2.0 connectors (Type-B), which are presently seen in all Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone smartphones and tablets. The new design is supposedly robust for laptops and tablets, and small enough for smartphones and similar gadgets.

The USB Type-C will be USB 3.1 compatible, which is capable of transferring data at speeds of 10Gbps, and power supply up to 100W.
