GHMC central zone litter-free plans only on paper

22 roads in the main city to be improved for the ensuing Metropolis Week

Hyderabad:The 23-km litter-free programme in the Central Zone of GHMC has failed to take off even after 10 days from its implementation date (August 1).
Disagreements between GHMC top officials and the standing committee, headed by the Mayor, has hindered the initiative.

Apart from the Central Zone, the standing committee so far has not come up with a list of areas where the programme is supposed to be implemented.

For the last 10 days, a handful of ground staff has only been educating a few establishments regarding violations and no fines have been imposed.

Hyderabad Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain said, “The standing committee was not informed when the notification was issued and the programme was announced. The elected body said that before implementing the program and imposing fines, the GHMC should first provide basic material like open dumping bins, rickshaws etc. That apart, it should not be restricted to just 23 km but 300 km. The standing committee has identified major roads where the initiative needs to be implemented and has submitted the same to me. The program will be begin much before the Metropolis Week.”

The mayor also said that he was not satisfied with the arrangements for the Metropolis Week and that the works carried out by the zonal and circle heads were not up to the mark. Another estimation of works worth Rs 25 crore is to be put up in each zone.
