On festival day, rains come as blessing

Vendors cut flower prices by Rs 25 for ‘Varamahalakshmi’

Bengaluru: For consumers who were pinched by skyrocketing prices of flowers on Thursday, showers on Friday morning came as a relief. Vendors at K.R. Market reduced prices of flowers by Rs 25-35 soon after it started pouring heavily around 5 am.

According to Mr Diwakar, president, Flower Vendors’ Association, the sales completely dropped by Friday morning.

“For vendors, ‘Varamahalakshmi Vrata’ is the biggest festival in terms of sales. Though it is a common practice to increase the prices a few days ahead of the festival, this time the prices were higher than last year. That is because the quantity of flowers available in the market was far lesser,” he added. Sales were normal on Thursday and Wednesday, but they dropped by 70 per cent on Friday evening. As no significant sales were made between 6 am and 10 am on Friday because of rains, the vendors cut the prices, he said.

Mr Venkatappa. K, a vendor, said, “Festivals are the only time we make good business. I come from Kanakapura, nearly 60 km from Bengaluru, hoping that I can earn good money. If it rains, customers will stay indoors and will not come all the way to market. How can we earn any profit?”

Chrysanthemum, which was being sold at Rs 350 a kg, was sold at Rs 300, and jasmine which cost Rs 1,500 kg was sold at Rs 1,200 due to rain.
