Thieves attack couple, rob jewels

Assailants loot seven sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 1 lakh cash

Coimbatore: Masked thieves attacked a couple with logs and robbed seven sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 1 lakh cash from their house in Podanur Chettipalayam on the city outskirts.

The injured couple is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The Podanur police said Kullapasamy (57), employed in an engineering college, was living with his wife Thangamani (52) and son Ravi in a house in Kalangadu Pudur, near Podanur Chettipalayam.

Around 8 pm on Wednesday, Ravi went outside to meet his friends, while Kullapasamy was watching TV and his wife cooking in the kitchen.

The rear door of the house was left open for ventilation.

Taking advantage of the open door, a three-member, masked gang, stormed into the house.

The gang shut the rear door, switched off the lights and threatened the couple at knife-point.

The gang members robbed seven sovereigns of gold jewels from Thangamani and took '1 lakh cash kept in the cupboard locker.

They battered the couple with a log and fled.

When Ravi returned home, he found his parents lying in a pool of blood. He rushed his parents to a private hospital for treatment.

Superintendent of police M. Sudhakar and his team rushed to the spot and conducted investigations.

The police suspect that the same gang had also attempted to burgle a house in Eachanari. However, they bolted after the residents raised an alarm.
