States must act on food price: Centre

Centre asked states to prevent illegal hoarding and black marketing
Mumbai: Food minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday said that the Prevention of Black Marketing Act would have to be further strengthened to combat hoarding. Stating that there is no shortage of food articles at this point of time despite a lean season, the minister said that the prices of food articles are climbing higher due to hoarding by traders.
“Let me make it clear that there is no shortage of food articles as of now. However, we have to ensure that these items reach the final consumers,” he said
The minister also said that state governments too have to come forward and take stern action to get these stocks into the market.
One of the options is to prescribe stringent punishment by strengthening the Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act.
