DMDK evicted en masse for creating ruckus

DMDK whip alleged that the crime graph indicated an upward trend in the state

Chennai: Opposition DMDK members were evicted en masse from the assembly for creating ruckus and disrupting the proceedings while demanding to reply to Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s remarks against the party.

Speaking on the debate on the demand for grants for police department on Wednesday, DMDK whip V. C. Chandrakumar alleged that the crime graph indicated an upward trend in the state and that the law and order situation deteriorated.

However, Ms Jayalalithaa countered by providing a long list of the involvement of DMDK members in several criminal cases. Immediately, DMDK members sought Speaker Dhanapal’s permission to reply to the Chief Minister.

But after he was allowed to speak again, Chandrakumar deviated from the topic and sought expunction of some remarks made by the Chief Minister. Declining to entertain his plea, the Speaker reminded him that he was given nearly an hour to speak. “The House has to transact its business. You have been given one hour to speak. You should allow other members to speak,” Mr Dhanapal said.

However, DMDK members rushed to the Speaker’s chair and raised slogans against him. As his repeated requests to DMDK legislators to resume their seats went unheeded, Mr Dhanapal finally had to call in the assembly marshals to evict them.
