Anantapur/Srikakulam/Bhubaneswar: Heavy outflows continued from the Tungabhadra reservoir following heavy rains in upstream areas of Shimoga and Agumbe Ghat in Karnataka. The Tungabhadra Board authorities released about 1.87 lakh cusecs of water to the downstream areas of Tungabhdara on Monday.
According to information reaching here, many temples and structures have been submerged due to floods in the river near Hampi. The historical Rama temple and Saint Purandaradasa mandap were submerged.
Revenue and police officials are evacuating people from low-lying areas. Kurnool district officials sounded an alert. Collector Vijaya Mohan has been monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, SP Ravi Krishna suspended constable Sreenivasa Rao, who was on-duty at the Nagalapuram police station on the outskirts of Kurnool late on Sunday night.
The SP, who took the initiative to alert people living in low-lying areas of the flood, found the constable as well as the head constable sleeping at the police station during a surprise check. Memos have been issued to SI Rakesh and head constable Ramprasad.
The water levels have also been increasing in the Vamsadhara, Nagavali and Mahendratanaya rivers of Srikakulam. All the rivers start in the hilly areas of Odisha. According to Vamsadhara officials, the level increased to 41,000 cusecs by 8 pm at Gotta barrage in Hiramandalam. In the case of Nagavali river at Narayanapura dam, the water level was recorded as 13,300 cusecs by 7 pm. Water level also rose at Mahendratanaya river in Pathapatnam mandal.
Meanwhile, in Odisha, incessant rains since Saturday have triggered a flood-like situation. Road communication in Kalahandi was disrupted with the Hati river overflowing. In Nayagarh most low-lying areas were submerged by floodwaters and nearly 14,000 people of Bhapur and Gania blocks were marooned.
