Man alleges foul play in wife’s death

Woman slips into coma, dies after tubectomy

Coimbatore: In a case of family planning surgery allegedly going wrong, a 32-year-old woman slipped into coma when she was undergoing the operation. A week later, she died at the government hospital without responding to treatment.

The deceased woman’s husband, Vinod Kumar, a daily wage labourer from Sukrawarpet, brought his two daughters to the district collectorate on Monday and submitted a petition to district revenue officer K. Karpagam, seeking action against the doctors who performed the surgery.

According to Vinod Kumar, his wife Kalaivani had approached the corporation hospital at Pattu Nool Kara Sandhu near Sukrawarpet for consultations on family planning.

The couple was then referred to a family planning camp that was under way at the corporation hospital situated at Vysyal street. Kalaivani was one among the 19 women who underwent tubectomy, but slipped into coma during the operation.

She was then moved to the intensive care unit of Coimbatore medical college and hospital for a week before she died without responding to treatment. Her husband alleged that the doctor who had performed the family planning operation was at fault and sought action against the doctor. He also appealed to the district administration to grant compensation as he had to raise his two daughters all by himself.

City health officer, Dr P. Aruna, told Deccan Chronicle that the woman had suffered unforeseen anaesthetic complications and oxygen saturation had reduced drastically. The condition worsened when her blood pressure also dropped. She was given drugs to normalise her BP and was supplemented with oxygen before she was admitted to the intensive care unit of CMCH for further treatment.

As the couple had hidden the fact that the woman was epileptic, the anaesthetic complications had arisen and she could not be revived, the chief health officer added.
