Courses to begin after Cabinet nod

AP government had requested the Centre to allow starting the academic session from year itself

Hyderabad: The Union HRD ministry has said courses in the newly sanctioned central institutes cannot begin from this academic year since admissions process is over in most of these universities.

The HRD ministry also said that academic sessions can begin after approvals from the Cabinet and the Expenditure Finance Committee of the Planning Commission.

The ministry said that one each of the IIT, IIM, central university, IISER, NIT and tr-ibal university for Andhra Pradesh were sanctioned while Telangana state has been awarded just a tribal university.

The Andhra Pradesh government had requested the Centre to allow starting the academic session from this year itself as temporary facilities for beginning the institutions were already identified.

However, the Centre did not heed to the request and said in the release, “The academic session can start after the approval from the EPC and the Cabinet for establishment of each institution. The admission process in IIMs, IITs, NITs and IISERs are mostly over and admissions to the current academic session are not possible.”

The government also said that a token provision of Rs 1 crore for each institution has been made to allow preparation of detailed project reports.

The Centre has also asked states to identify land for setting up these institutions. Andhra Pradesh had said it had identified land for IIM and IIT in Visakhapatnam, IISER in Tirupati and NIT in Kurnool.
