What drought? karnataka receives three per cent extra rainfall in July

About eight districts in the state have received excess rainfall
Bengaluru: Amidst fears of drought looming over the Indian subcontinent, Karnataka has escaped such an eventuality this year. The state has received 3% excess rainfall for the month of July and more rain is on the cards in the coming weeks.
Most of the rivers in the state are flowing in full spare for the past one week and those living near the dams, especially in Alamatti and K R S Dam, have been alerted to take safety precautions.
Currently, a well-marked low pressure area is hanging over North West Bay of Bengal.
By Thursday morning the system had moved inland from Orissa in the east coast to Gujarat in the west coast. This is expected to bring rains to most parts of western and southern India in the next two days.
Mr B Puttanna, Director of Bengaluru IMD Centre, said that the state had received 301.8 mm of rainfall in the month of July as against the normal rainfall for the month, of 274.3 mm.
About eight districts in the state have received excess rainfall and some of the centres in coastal parts of the state such as Gokarna and Shimoga have received 350 mm rainfall in a single day. About six rain- recording stations in coastal Karnataka have received over 250 mm of rainfall in a day.
“Eleven districts in North Interior Karnataka have received a normal amount of rainfall for this monsoon. Only the district of Ramanagara has received lower rainfall during July which is 62% less than the actual rainfall for the month.
During 2013, the trend for July rainfall was similar and the state had received 366.2 mm of rain, which is 34% higher than last year,” Mr Puttanna said.
