New sub-stations, HT power lines at Rs 5k crore

The new set up will provide uninterrupted electricity
Chennai: In a major effort to ensure uninterrupted power supply and improve the infrastructure in TN, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has announced a slew of projects including setting up of 60 sub-stations and laying of 2,500-km of high voltage power transmission corridor at a cost of Rs 5,284 crore during the current fiscal. For Chennai, two new sub-stations would be set up at for Rs 338.8 crores at West Mambalam and Porur, Ms Jayalalithaa said, while making a suo moto statement in the assembly on Thursday.
Listing out numerous measures initiated by her government over the past three years that had put an end to power cuts in the state, she said all power curbs imposed by the previous DMK regime was removed from June this year and the consumers were being provided uninterrupted electricity.
“Due to various efforts taken by me, Tangedco met a peak demand of 13,775 MW on June 24, 2014, and set a record supplying 294 million units,” Ms Jayalalithaa said and stated that it was crucial to strengthen the distribution network to ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers. Since 2011, her government had established 134 new sub-stations.
The Sholayar hydro-electric power station in Coimbatore, which was started in 1971, would be modernised and the installed capacity of the two plants would be increased to 42 MW from 35 MW, at a cost of 120 crore. This was being taken as part of her government’s efforts to give fillip to the hydro-electric power generating stations that were playing a key role in helping to meet the peak power demands in the state.
On the solar front, 102 MW installed capacity has been created since 2011 even as Tangedco had issued letters of intent (LOI) to entrepreneurs for generating 708 MW of power. She also allocated Rs 435.50 crore for setting up a 400 kV sub-station in Ramanathapuram to add solar power being generated from rooftops of homes. A 230 kV sub-station would be set up in Virudhunagar at a cost of Rs47.51 crore.
