Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu plans pharma hub for Andhra Pradesh

Genome Valley to be set up between Vizag-E. Godavari
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to set up a ‘Genome Valley’ between Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts to boost the pharmaceutical sector.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said that the government is planning to set up the Genome Valley and will appoint a nodal officer to execute the project.
Genome Valley will house a pharma research and development cluster. Mr Naidu met a group of industrialists from the pharma sector, comprising Dr C.R. Naidu, Jasti Venkat, R. Narasimha Raju, Jayant Tagore and Narayana Reddy in the Lake View guest house. The industrialists requested the Chief Minister to provide all infrastructure to make AP a pharma hub.
Mr Naidu said, “A special wing will be set up to make the state one of the biggest pharmaceutical units in the country. During my tenure, united AP was ranked first in pharma industry. It had slid to the third position in the past ten years.”
The AP Genome Valley will be on the lines of the one located in Shamirpet near Hyderabad. It will be like the ‘Vaccine Hub of India’ in Shamirpet, with facilities of leading vaccine producers like Biological E, Bharat Biotech and Globion Bio within the cluster and with companies like Shantha Biotech (recently acquired by Sanofi), Indian Immunologicals Ltd. etc. AP wants to attract national and international bio and pharma companies in a similar way.
