Monsoon update: Telangana dams to receive water soon

Low-pressure system to cause heavy rains in both states, Telangana & Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad / Visakhapatnam: With the Almatti, and Narayanpur projects in Karnataka releasing a large quantity of floodwater into the Krishna river, the Jurala and Srisailam dams in Telangana are set to receive the first flood of the season within the next couple of days. The Central Water Commission forecast that inflows into Almatti were encouraging and both the upstream dams had almost reached their full level and started generating hydel power.

Though there was a decrease of inflow into Almatti from 1.55 lakh cusecs on Monday to 1.08 lakh cusecs on Tuesday, the forecast says that flood water flow of about 1 lakh cusecs would continue in the the dam for some more days and that will be released downstream into the river. The Tungabhadra dam near Hospet in Karnataka also continues to receive good inflows from the river but the water is unlikely to be released downstream to the Srisailam dam at this point.

Meanwhile, Srisailam dam authorities have started generation of power using the storage water. Nearly 5,000 cusecs each are being released through both left and right bank power houses from where the water will subsequently reach the Nagarjunasagar dam, which is downstream of Srisailam.
Meanwhile, meteorologists said the southwest monsoon had been vigorous over coastal AP and Telangana. Minimum temperatures were 2ºC at some places in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

A low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal has developed into a well-marked low-pressure area. It is expected to move west-northwestwards during next 48 hours, met officials said.

The Met department has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh and Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Warangal and Ranga Reddy of Telangana.

Over the past 24 hours, rainfall occurred in many areas in coastal AP and Telangana witnessed significant rainfall in the last 24 hours. Narasapuram recorded 7.7 cm, Machilipatnam 6 cm, Nizamabad 5.2 cm, Medak 3 cm and Mahbubnagar with 2 cm.
