Satyam scam case posted to August 11

Known as country’s biggest accounting fraud, scam came to light in January, 2009

Hyderabad: The court hearing the case of the multi-crore Satyam Computers Services Limited scam here in Nampally posted the case to August 11.

The date for the verdict is likely to be fixed on the day. All the accused in the case, including prime accused and former chairman of Satyam Computers B. Ramalinga Raju appeared before the court.

Earlier, Special Judge B.V.L.N. Chakravarthi of the XXI Court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate had last month posted the case for Monday for pronouncing the verdict. All the accused were accordingly summoned. But as the judge was on leave the matter was posted again.

The trial in the case had concluded in June before the special court, which examined nearly 216 witnesses and marked 3,038 documents in the course of the hearing.

Described as the country’s biggest accounting fraud, the scam came to light in January, 2009, after Ramalinga Raju allegedly confessed to manipulating his company’s account books and inflating profits over many years to the tune of several crores of rupees.

During the trial, the Central Bureau of Investigation alleged that the scam caused a loss of about Rs 14,000 crore to Satyam shareholders, while the defense countered the charges, saying the accused were not responsible for the fraud and all the documents filed by the central agency relating to the case were fabricated and not according to law.
