Maharashtra crisis brews in Belgaum

Prohibitory orders under section 144 IPC have been promulgated in Belgaum, till July 29

Belgaum: Belgaum is on the edge with police resorting to a lathicharge to disperse pro-Maharashtra supporters who hurled stones at them during a protest against the removal of a controversial‘Maharashtra state’ signboard at Yellur in the district on Sunday.

Belgaum deputy commissioner N. Jayaram told reporters that the re-erected 'Maharashtra Rajya' plaque was removed by the district administration on Sunday following which a crowd started pelting stones at the police. As the crowd turned violent, police resorted to a lathicharge. Some police personnel were injured in the incident.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the IPC have been promulgated in Belgaum, Khanapur taluk and Nippani town till July 29. On Saturday, pro-Maharashtra supporters and outfits had re-erected the signboard at Yellur after the previous one was razed to the ground by the Public Works Department on Friday.

The PWD had taken the action following a High Court direction.
