Centre to seek jurist view on collegium bill

Union law and justice minister will consult top jurists to elicit their views on Bill

New Delhi: The Union government will seek the views of eminent jurists and former judges on the proposed Judicial Appointments Commission Bill which aims to replace the present collegium system. Union law and justice minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will consult top jurists and former judges on Monday to elicit their views on the Bill, sources said.

The minister had last week written to leaders of major political parties seeking their support for the Bill. The leaders have also been asked to give their views on the issue. The Bill, prepared during the UPA-2 regime, is set to be revived after the allegations of Justice (Retd.) Markandey Katju stating that Centre and three Chief Justices of India had colluded in appointing a tainted judge to the Madras HC.
