'Amma scheme' to train jobless youth in Tamil Nadu

The initiative would cost the state exchequer Rs 32.5 crore

Chennai: The state government will launch ‘Amma scheme’ for training and employment in an effort to train qualified youth for employability in technical fields. Making a suo motu statement in the assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the initiative would benefit over 25,000 youth this fiscal. At least 30 per cent of these seats would be reserved for women.

Under this scheme, unemployed youth aged between 18 and 25 years having passed engineering, professional degree or diploma courses would be trained resulting in a job for six months with a stipend of Rs 5,000 per month to be paid by the hiring companies. On completion of training, the government would pay Rs 12,000 to the company.

After the training, the skills of the trainees would be tested by National Skills Development Corporation and the youths will be certified based on their performance. The initiative would cost the state exchequer Rs 32.5 crore, the CM said.

Jayalalithaa also announced a hike in minimum subsidy for entrepreneurs starting business with a capital between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh from 15 per cent (Rs 75,000) to 25 per cent or Rs 1,25,000.
