Sheer dupattas setting a trend

'You need to have good body because sheer dupatta will highlight all contours'

Alia Bhatt recently walked the ramp for designer Manish Malhotra and wowed the gathering. Dressed in a red lehenga-choli and a sheer dupatta, the actress impressed everyone.

“I loved the entire outfit and how it all came together. The sheer effect gave it a stunning look. Nowadays, the trend is keeping the skirts heavily embellished rather than the dupattas,” says designer Ridhi Mehra, whose designs have been worn by the likes of Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Samantha.

“Alia’s dramatic look was great on the runway, but I feel it’s more appropriate for people attending the wedding rather than for the bride. You need to have a good body because the sheer dupatta will highlight all the contours of your body,” says designer Nachiket Barve, whose designs celebrities such as Kalki Koechlin, Shraddha Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor have worn in the past.

“This look gives people an option to recycle their wedding lehengas, which they can’t really wear often,” says Nachiket. He also adds that balance is the key to getting it right.

“The blouse needs to be well-fitted and teamed well with the jewellery around the neck. Try to opt for contrasting colours. For instance, a gold and peach lehenga paired with a coral dupatta,” says Nachiket.

Ridhi suggests that if you don’t want to wear contrasting colours, then “One can go for similar coloured lehenga-choli and opt for subtle colours when it comes to the dupatta.”
