College lands proposed for setting up AIIMS

State govt had identified five sites for setting up an AIIMS institution

Chennai: Officials in the health department feel that the setting up of an ‘All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS) institution will not only bring the central government model of medical treatment to the state, but would also bring an overall development in the field where the institutions is established. Most of the sites identified for the central institute belonged to medical colleges in the state, sources said.

The Chief Minister had written a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday that the state government had identified five sites for setting up an AIIMS institution.

The letter also said the union government can choose a suitable site to establish the centre in its first phase of the project that aims to establish the institution in all the states under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana’.

The state may be is called the ‘medical hub’ that attracts patients from the northern parts of the country and from across the globe due to the advanced facilities and treatment at the government as well as good contribution by the corporate and multi specialty hospitals here.
Even so, an institution like AIIMS is very much required here, officials said.

“Though there would not be any change in the technology used or in the medical or surgical skills with the establishment of around 1,000 bedded new centre here, the difference could be witnessed in terms of management, technology and the model of the treatment provided,” they said.

They are of the view that the standard, procedure and pattern of other medical institutions in the state would also improve. Besides providing good ground for research, the centre would also have an addition of 100 medical seats for the MBBS course.

Sources said around 200 acres of land has been identified at each site, 1. In Kancheepuram where the land belongs to the Chengalpet Medical College; 2. Government land at Sengipatti in Thanjavur; 3. Perundurai medical college land in Erode. 4 Animal Husbandry Department land in Pudukottai district and 5,Thoppur medical college land in Madurai.

Besides road, rail and air connectivity, the lands identified also have good water and electricity facility, the letter by the CM mentioned.
