Galle: South Africa left-hander Jean-Paul Duminy struck a superb century Thursday as the tourists declared at 455-9 on the second day of the first test against Sri Lanka.

Duminy was unbeaten on 100 when South Africa captain Hashim Amla announced the declaration at the fall of Morne Morkel's wicket for 22, midway into the final session.

Duminy and Morkel frustrated the home side with a partnership of 66 runs, a record for the ninth wicket for South Africa against Sri Lanka.

Duminy struck 10 fours off 206 balls during his fourth test century to build on a fine 51 by wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock earlier in the first session.

For Sri Lanka, off-spinner Dilruwan Perera was the most successful with 4-162.
