India, US try to pressurise Pakistan to proceed against Hafiz Saeed

Officials hope that Pak may succumb to US pressure

New Delhi: At a time when controversy has broken out over the meeting of senior journalist Ved Pratap Vaidik with Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, Indian intelligence agencies are silently working with their US counterparts to mount pressure on Pakistan to arrest the dreaded terrorist.

It was increased co-operation between Ind-ian and US intelligence agencies that forced the latter to label the Jamaat-ud-Dawa as a terror outfit leading to a freeze on all their movable and immovable assets in the US.

Indian intelligence agencies along with the internal security division of the MHA sent a detailed dossier last week on Hafiz Saeed to the US security agencies, detailing his close links with the Tehreek-e-Taliban.

The document also spells out how Hafiz Sae-ed is roping in the Tehr-eek-e-Taliban operative in Afghanistan to target Indian and US assets there. Tehreek-e-Taliban has a sizeable presence in Afghanistan, particularly in borders areas adjoining Pakistan. India has also told the US authorities that Hafiz Saeed played a key role in masterminding the attack on Indian consulate in Heart in May.

“Intelligence inputs suggest that there is a strong possibility that Hafiz Saeed may use Tehreek-e-Taliban operatives to target US assets in the same manner as they attacked the Indian consulate,” the dossier says.

Indian agencies want that the US should use its influence with Pakistan to take stringent action against Haifz Saeed and arrest him immediately.

Intelligence officials are hopeful that since the US too has labelled Hafiz as a terrorist they will exert pressure on Pak authorities to proceed against him.
