New Delhi: As the controversy over the destruction of 11,100 files related to the Union home ministry continued to haunt the Centre, Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday assured the Rajya Sabha that it will not allow tampering or destruction of any link with the country’s glorious history.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the Mr Singh also pointed out that this is not the first time that files have been destroyed in the ministry and the same has been done duri-ng the tenure of the UPA.
“No file relating to country’s freedom struggle has been destroyed. We have no agenda to change the history of the country.” Mr Singh said
He also assured the House that the Centre is not a “closed book” and that the Centre believes in “transparency’’.
Mr Singh also said the 11,100 files have been destroyed as per the mandate of manual of office procedure.
The Congress however demanded a white paper from the Union government on its order to weed out old files and paper, and attacked it on the issue latching on to reports that files related to the the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi were destroyed.
Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed insisted that an “impartial investigation” needs to be carried out to determine what kinds of files were destroyed.
