Two dead, hundreds escape in Tirumala tree crash

200 devotees had a close escape, as they waited in queue for darshanam

Tirupati: Two devotees died and three others received injuries after a huge eucalyptus tree atop Tirumala came crashing down on the road near Water Works Circle on Tuesday.

It was a close shave for another 200 devotees waiting in the Rs 300 queue. Cab driver K. Madhu, 35, and a Chennai-based devotee M. Saroja, 50, succumbed to their injuries.

Both of them got trapped beneath the branches of the tree. Three others were admitted to S.V.R.R. Government Hospital and Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences.

Commotion prevailed among the devotees following the mishap. Dama Madhu, Nadaneerajanam, co-ordinator for TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Bhakti channel, also received injuries and his bike was damaged.
