Rail Budget 2014: Modi calls it growth engine

Modi said that the current budget aspires for better service, speed and safety

New Delhi: Terming the Railway Budget as 'futuristic and growth-oriented', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said it would speed up the country's development and help provide greater security and services to the people.

“Congratulations to the railway minister Sadananda Gowda for presenting a futuristic and growth oriented budget. It is a budget for the common people. The Budget presented in Parliament by the Railway Minister shows where the government wants to take India through the railways as it focuses on strengthening institutional mechanism, transparency and integrity”, Modi tweeted.

Describing the railways as a "growth engine" for India, Modi said the Rail Budget "aspires for better service, speed and safety. It is an effort to create a modern Railways contributing towards a developed India."

The Rail Budget will speed up the development of the country, modernise Indian Railways, and provided greater security and services to the people, the Prime Minister said.

He further said, "Rail Budget shows the important role of Railways in India's development journey. We can see the great use of technology also". The PM said it will set the direction not just for the Railways, but through the railways, for the entire country, according to a PMO statement.

The initiatives taken in this rail budget for facilitating global trade will go a long way in establishing India's economic prosperity, he said.

Asserting that an institution like the railways cannot be run in an ad-hoc manner, he said "institutional mechanisms are required for decision-making, vision and initiatives."

Modi said the budget also lays emphasis on transparency and integrity. Noting that the people of India use the railways for travel extensively, he said "they belong to various communities and their requirement of special facilities is being taken care of".

The expressed confidence that the objectives of the rail budget would be successfully achieved.
