Centre not to unveil China war report

China defeated India in the 1962 war which is described as a military disaster

New Delhi: Just four months after BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad (then in Opposition) demanded that the Henderson-Brooks report into India’s 1962 war debacle be made public, the BJP appears to have done a U-turn, with the government telling Parliament that disclosure of the report would “not be in national interest”.

Defence minister Arun Jaitley told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday: “The government is aware of reports purporting to disclose part of the Henderson Brooks Report on the India-China war. This secret document has not been declassified.”

Mr Prasad had then said “report holds PM Jawaharlal Nehru responsible and rightly so”. He also said, “Surely, Nehru has to account a lot for and the time has come that the future generation of India must debate who secured India more, Sardar Patel or Jawaharlal Nehru.”

The NDA, meanwhile, said, “We are aware about China carrying out military modernisation and extensive infrastructure development along the India-China border.” The government is seized of the security needs of the country.

Mr Jaitley stated, “There have been no incident of intrusion along India-China border.”
