Sudden death of Orkut saddens netizens

Orkut was the first popular social networking site

Kochi: Orkut revolutionised the social media sphere and brought Indians to the internet. But with the growth of Facebook, the people flocked to it and gradually to Twitter after deserting Orkut.

But the news of Google's decision to kill Orkut came as a shocker for many and almost all of the Facebook users logged into their Orkut account to pay a final visit. It was a travel down memory lane. “Look what I retrieved from the sinking ship Orkut,” a random post with an old photograph read.

The most shared item on the Facebook and Twitter in the last week was the letter sent from Google announcing their decision to shut Orkut down. Netizens mourned the death of Orkut which was launched in 2004. Orkut was a major hit among Keralites for more than five years. It popularised the social networking set-up by using posts referred to as ‘Scraps.’ One of the distinctive features of Orkut was transparency. Lovers scrapped each other, friends posted testimonials praising their loved ones while many dug out old pals. Just like Facebook pages, Orkut had communities where people met every day of their virtual day and shared ideas. Orkut was the first social networking site which encouraged users to post their personal photos. Now the netizens are archiving the entire data and storing it.

“Will miss you Orkut, have made many good friends over there... many of the memories are there with that site. now its time to say good bye to it.” said Rohit Luthra.
